This twelve-day family safari is East Africa's finest all-ages adventure — combining Kenya's iconic Maasai Mara and Amboseli with Tanzania's legendary Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, then finishing with five nights of Zanzibar beach bliss for the whole family.
Every lodge on this itinerary has been selected for family friendliness — junior ranger programmes, age-appropriate game drives, family suites or connecting rooms, and guides who genuinely love introducing children to Africa. Seeing a lion through your child's eyes is an experience that changes your family forever.
Children aged 8 and over are welcome on all game drives. Younger children have dedicated programmes at camp. The Zanzibar finale is perfect for all ages — calm waters, snorkelling, dhow trips and beach time.
Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as a family. Met by your guide and transferred to your Nairobi hotel. Junior ranger welcome packs distributed to all children — field guides, binoculars and a wildlife checklist that becomes a treasured keepsake. Safari briefing dinner and early bed — tomorrow the adventure begins.
Drive south from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (3 hours) — passing through Maasai homesteads and arriving as Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak emerges from the clouds above you. Amboseli has Africa's best elephant viewing — large family herds are seen daily at very close range. The children will never forget their first elephant.
A full day in Amboseli — morning junior ranger programme (children learn to track elephant footprints, identify birds and read the landscape), afternoon family game drive. Visit the Observation Hill for panoramic views across the marsh where hundreds of elephants congregate. Maasai cultural visit in the afternoon — the warriors teach the children to throw a spear and jump the traditional Maasai warrior jump.
The big drive — northwest from Amboseli to the Maasai Mara (5–6 hours through beautiful Maasai country). Game drive en route as you enter the Mara ecosystem. Arrive at your family-friendly lodge — tree houses or family suites are available. Evening campfire with your guide sharing stories of the Mara and its animals.
A full day dedicated to the Mara's extraordinary predators. Your guide knows where the resident lion prides spend their mornings, which cheetah coalitions are currently raising cubs, and where the leopards hunt along the Talek River. Junior rangers record every sighting in their field journals. Bush breakfast in the field.
Optional: early morning hot air balloon safari for children aged 8 and above — an extraordinary experience that most children remember as the highlight of their lives. After breakfast, begin the drive south towards the Tanzanian border (Isebania). Cross into Tanzania and continue to the Serengeti, arriving for a game drive and sunset over the endless plains.
The Serengeti never disappoints families. Lion cubs playing at the den, zebra foals nursing beside their mothers, vultures spiralling over a kill in the distance. Your guide turns every sighting into an educational moment — children learn about predator-prey relationships, animal behaviour and the extraordinary ecosystem that makes the Serengeti work. The junior wildlife quiz at dinner becomes fiercely competitive.
Morning Serengeti game drive then wind up through the Ngorongoro Highlands to the crater rim. The highland forest is home to buffalo, elephant, colobus monkeys and extraordinary birdlife. Check in to your crater-rim lodge — children race to the viewpoint to peer down into the caldera below.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — Africa's most wildlife-rich enclosed ecosystem. All Big Five within 260km². The children's faces as they see their first black rhino, their first pink flamingo flock, their first hippo pool are the moments parents treasure forever. Junior ranger certificates awarded at the end of the day for completing all their wildlife challenges.
Drive to Arusha and fly to Zanzibar — the dramatic shift from wilderness to island paradise is one of the most joyful moments of this journey. Check in to your family beachfront hotel on the calm northern shore. Afternoon free — first swim in the Indian Ocean, first palm tree, first fresh coconut on the beach.
Morning snorkelling trip to the coral reef — fish of every colour dart through the crystal water. Most children rate this as their favourite day of the entire trip. Afternoon visit to UNESCO-listed Stone Town — spice market, carved doors, rooftop sundowner and the famous Forodhani night market where the children choose their own street food for dinner.
Final morning on the beach — build sandcastles, snorkel one more time or simply sit with a fresh juice and watch the dhows sail past. Transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your onward international flight. Every member of the family leaves changed by Africa.
