Overview

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world — rising 5,895m from the Tanzanian plains to the snow-capped Uhuru Peak. It is one of the most iconic and accessible high-altitude climbs on earth, requiring no technical climbing experience but demanding exceptional fitness, acclimatisation and the right support.

The Machame Route — known as the "Whisky Route" — is the most scenic and one of the most popular routes up Kilimanjaro. At 7 days, it allows superior acclimatisation compared to shorter routes, dramatically improving summit success rates. The route traverses dramatic ecological zones from lush rainforest through moorland, alpine desert and finally the ice-capped summit zone.

Your climb is led by a KINAPA-certified head guide and supported by a full team of experienced assistant guides, porters and a mountain cook. All equipment and meals are provided on the mountain.

The most important acclimatisation day. Climb high to Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch — allowing your body to adjust to altitude — then descend to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" approach is key to summit success. The Barranco Wall looms above camp.

  • Ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) — lunch
  • Descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
  • Barranco Wall viewed from camp
  • Acclimatisation walk around camp

Day 4 — 3,960m to 4,000m · 5km · 4hrs
+

Scramble up the famous Barranco Wall — a 257m near-vertical rock face that is more exciting than it looks. Non-technical but thrilling, with extraordinary views from the top. Continue across the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp.

  • Ascend the Barranco Wall (early morning)
  • Cross Karanga Valley
  • Arrive Karanga Camp (4,000m)
  • Rest and preparation for summit push
