The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north — the only route to ascend from the Kenyan border side. It is the quietest route on the mountain, offering genuine solitude in dramatic semi-arid moorland very different from the forested southern approaches.
The northern face is drier than the south, making Rongai the best choice during the short rainy season (October to December). The route is gentler in gradient, making it suitable for those who prefer a steadier ascent, and descends via the popular Marangu route on the southeast side.
Arrive KIA. Transfer to Moshi. Pre-climb briefing and gear check.
Drive to the Rongai Gate on the northern face — near the Kenyan border. Enter semi-arid moorland very different from the forest-cloaked southern routes. Trek to First Cave Camp.
Continue ascending through heather moorland with increasingly dramatic views of Kibo summit. Arrive Kikelewa Camp — one of the quietest camps on the mountain.
Acclimatisation day — climb to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m) beneath the dramatic jagged Mawenzi peak, then cross the lunar saddle to Kibo Hut for the summit push.
Midnight departure from Kibo Hut. Ascend Gilman's Point and crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Horombo Hut via the Marangu Route.
Final descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Certificate ceremony and transfer to Moshi.
