The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest overland animal movement on earth — 1.5 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra circling the Serengeti ecosystem year-round in search of fresh grass. This carefully timed eight-day fly-in safari positions you at the very heart of the spectacle.
Between July and October, the herds are in the northern Serengeti — and the dramatic Mara River crossings are at their peak. Thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters in a churning, chaotic, heart-stopping spectacle. January to February brings calving season in the south — 8,000 calves born daily and cheetahs hunting with extraordinary success.
Fly-in camps are repositioned seasonally to stay with the herds — your camp for this journey will be at the optimal location for your travel dates, confirmed 60 days before departure.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and meet your Top Poly representative. Transfer to Arusha for a briefing dinner and final preparation. Tonight's accommodation is in an elegant colonial-style property in the Arusha coffee belt.
After an early breakfast, transfer to Arusha Airport for your light aircraft flight to the Serengeti (approx. 1 hour). Your guide meets you on the airstrip and heads immediately for your first game drive. The southern Serengeti's short-grass plains host the calving season (Jan–Feb) and extraordinary cheetah and lion activity year-round.
A full day in the southern Serengeti plains. In calving season (Jan-Feb), witness the extraordinary spectacle of 8,000 wildebeest calves born daily — and the predators that follow. In July–September, the southern herds have moved north and predator activity on the resident lions and cheetahs is the focus.
Short flight to Seronera — the heartland of the Serengeti and one of Africa's finest year-round wildlife areas. The Seronera River valley hosts resident leopards in the sausage trees, a large lion population and the famous Seronera pride. Afternoon and evening drives.
The Central Serengeti's Seronera region has the highest concentration of predators anywhere in Africa. Your guide knows the resident animals by individual recognition — expect to spend extended time with resident lion prides, cheetah coalitions and leopards. Optional hot air balloon safari this morning (additional cost).
A defining moment — the short flight north to the Kogatende region of the Serengeti, where the Mara River crossings take place between July and October. Your guide takes you directly to the river to assess the build-up. When the conditions are right — thousands of wildebeest massing at the bank — a crossing can occur at any moment. Your guide reads the herd's behaviour to position you perfectly.
Today is dedicated entirely to the river crossings. You will position at the most active crossing points on the Mara River from early morning. A crossing is never guaranteed — the wildebeest may hesitate for hours before plunging — but your guide's decades of experience maximise your chances. When it happens, nothing in nature compares. The noise, the chaos, the crocodiles, the extraordinary survival against the odds.
Between crossings, excellent lion, leopard and cheetah sightings are almost guaranteed in this part of the Serengeti. A packed lunch is taken in the field. Return to camp at dusk — no one speaks much over dinner.
One final morning drive along the Mara River before your flight south to Arusha. Your guide compiles your personalised wildlife tally — an extraordinary list. Transfer from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.
