Every year, 1.5 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra undertake a 1,800km circular journey across the Serengeti ecosystem and Maasai Mara in search of fresh grass. It is the largest overland wildlife migration on earth — and one of the most humbling, extraordinary events a person can witness in a lifetime.

The famous Mara River crossings — where thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters in a churning, chaotic spectacle — occur between July and October. But the migration is year-round, with calving season in January–February in the southern Serengeti, the build-up north through March–June, and the legendary crossings peaking in July–September.
